The Importance of Culture

In 2013, the multinational management consulting company, Accenture, conducted a study titled, “Corporate Innovation Is Within Reach: Nurturing and Enabling an Entrepreneurial Culture,” that involved 1,000 individuals comprised of 600 corporate employees, 200 corporate business decision makers, and 200 self-employed individuals.1 The study revealed that individuals are willing to contribute ideas, but there is, generally, a lack of managerial support for these ideas.

Thirty-six percent say they are too busy doing their job to pursue new ideas.

Twenty-seven percent have avoided pursuing an idea within their company because they think there may be negative consequences.

While 49% believe that management support for new ideas is important, only 20% say that such support exists.

Forty-two percent believe that tolerance for failure is important to support innovation, but only 12% believe their company does a good job of providing this.2
